What
started as one week of recognition has since developed
into a monthlong celebration.
March is Women’s History Month. This year’s theme, “Women:
Builders of Communities and Dreams,” honors the spirit of possibility and
hope set in motion by generations of women. The theme honors women for bringing
communities together and restoring hope in the face of impossible odds.
“Wouldn’t it be great if we did not need a month dedicated to women’s
history?” said Dr. Susan Calef, director of graduate studies in theology. “But
we have yet to achieve a ‘history’ that truly integrates the achievements,
contributions and struggles of women.”
The Eileen B. Lieben Center is sponsoring a clothing drive this month to collect
women’s professional and casual clothes. The drop-off locations are Deglman
Hall, Creighton Law School and Russell Child Development Center.
A Women’s History Month poster display is in the Reinert Alumni Memorial
Library lobby this month. It features women inventors, the history of the equal
rights movement and significant women in U.S. history.
On March 23 at 7 p.m., “Quilters We Come From: A Celebration of Women’s
Words of Wisdom” will be presented through song, dance, drama and recitation
by faculty, staff, administrators, students and alumni, both women and men. According
to Calef, the program reflects Creighton women’s collective wisdom about
the need for inclusivity in a world inclined toward division and exclusion.
