Soaking

When most students anticipate summer,
one of the last things they think of is going to
class. But this might be different if they knew some
summer courses are up to 50 percent cheaper than
fall and spring classes.
Debra Daly, director of Summer Sessions, said some independent study summer sessions
cost $750, about half the price of a regular three-credit class taken during
the fall or spring semesters.
Independent studies courses are just some of more than 300 courses offered during
the summer.
Most summer courses are three- or five-week sessions. The three-week sessions
run three times during the summer and include core courses and social sciences
courses, such as psychology and sociology.
The five-week sessions are offered twice in the summer and include physics, biology
and organic chemistry.
“I took organic chemistry last summer, and it was really good to only have
that class to worry about,” said Maureen Gross, Arts & Sciences junior.
“Organic Chemistry is the most popular of the five-week courses,” Daly
said. “We are the only school in Omaha that offers it, so we draw a lot
of students who go to school out of state.”
Online courses are available to students during the summer.
“We would like to do more online courses if students want to go home,” said
Barb Braden, dean of University College and Graduate School. “We need to
know what students want.”
Braden said students can complete an online survey at surveys.creighton.edu. More
courses will be available based on student feedback.
On-campus housing and various activities are available to students taking summer
courses.
Shuttles operate in the summer and can take students to Omaha Royals games, concerts
at Memorial Park, the College World Series and other places.
There are summer travel programs that give students the option to earn credit
abroad during the summer.
Daly said trips to Ireland, Mexico and China are popular. Trips to England
and Spain were added this year.
“The tuition is heavily discounted for these [summer travel programs],
so students can travel and get the best out of the experience,” she said.
Students can register for most summer courses until the session begins.
