This fall students will
be the direct beneficiaries of two new additions to
the Creighton community.
The
Division of Student Services hired two individuals
to help improve student life and activities. Susan
LeGalley has accepted the position of assistant director
of Student Activities for Greek Life and Leadership.
LeGalley will work with the fraternities and sororities,
Freshman Leadership Program and Magis Ambassadors.
In
addition to LeGalley, Amanda Magnuson is a new face
on campus. She has been named the new assistant
director
of Student Activities for Programming and Student
Organizations. Magnuson will work with the Creighton
Students Union
Program Board and the Leadership Honorary Society
and will coordinate more than 180 student organizations.
“
We have two new staff people who are amazing, wonderful
women with a lot of energy that will hit the
ground running,” said Michele Starzyk,
assistant dean of students.
Starzyk
said the Student Services Office was
looking for two people with experience and
who fit the
mission of the office.
“
As an office we are always striving for Magis and looking
for programs that enhance the development
of the students,” Starzyk
said.
For
LeGalley, Creighton also fit with what she was looking
for. LeGalley likes the
fact
that
Creighton is a Jesuit school that places
an emphasis on the
spiritual side of its students.
“The
opportunity to work with and develop the entire student
is not always available at public schools,” she
said.
Both
LeGalley and Magnuson have strong credentials and
solid educational backgrounds. LeGalley received
her Master of Education in Student
Affairs Leadership from
Grand Valley State. She also has a Master in Business Administration
from Eastern Michigan University and a Bachelor of Arts from
University of Michigan.
Magnuson
received her master’s
degree in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
and a bachelor’s in English from Northwestern
College. Most recently, Magnuson was the program
coordinator for student organizations
at UNL, a role similar to her new job at Creighton.
Magnuson
arrives at Creighton on Sept. 6, while LeGalley
arrived on campus on Aug. 29. LeGalley said her
first priorities are
to get to
know as
many people as possible and make her own assessment of where
everything is.
One of the
first
things LeGalley will examine is Greek life at Creighton.
“
Greek life is a passion for me,” LeGalley said.
LeGalley
said Greek life provides more than just social benefits
for students. It also teaches other skills, like
fundraising,
and helps
students academically
because of its grade point average requirements.
“
Fraternities and sororities provide an all around college
experience,” she
said.
To
meet LeGalley and Magnuson and become more involved
in school activities, students can
attend the Student
Involvement Fair
on Wednesday, September.
