Yes, that tiny spot is a country

Americans are ignorant. Now, before getting angry, take a step back and think about it. Can you pinpoint Bulgaria on a map? Or name its capital? Can you even locate all 50 states within the U.S.?

Neither could 100 percent of an International Mass Communications class on campus. Maybe this is not the students’ faults.

When was the last time students were required to take a geography class? And did that class even require more than cramming for a map test each week? Even in some history classes, students do not have to locate countries on a map. They just have to know when an event took place.

The size of the world continues to get smaller; it only takes a couple flights to get around the world. Yet, in the face of globalization, the U.S. focuses on celebrities and pop culture.

We are more likely to know who Paris Hilton is dating than who the Secretary of Defense is. So before you click on People.com, maybe check out CNN and see what is going on in Bulgaria.

We should work on putting the puzzle of the globe together.
