Late night serves up food, fun

College years are shaped by nights spent staying up until the wee hours of the morning. It is in those wee hours that the nostalgic memories of college are formed.

Ask any senior on campus and they will tell you with a smile, that on more than one occasion they were spotted chowing down at “late night.” But late night is not the same as it once was — and, gasp, most freshmen never have heard of it.

Creighton alumnus Andrew Jensen recalled spending many nights in Irma’s Bistro.

“I would go at least twice a week,” Jensen said. “I enjoyed the camarad-

erie with the other late-nighters.”

Irma’s Bistro was the late night home to most upperclassmen, but the Skutt Student Center facelift meant an end to the Bistro’s late-night reign.

Paul Gagliano, Arts & Sciences senior and resident adviser, said the change from late night in the Bistro to the Student Center was an attempt to form a stronger community in the Student Center.

“I think the Bistro was a perfect location for students in Gallagher and Kiewit,” Gagliano said. “It was a bonding experience; it was a good chance to talk to people.”

Despite how social the Bistro may have seemed, the restaurant did not create enough revenue to remain open until the late hours.

The late night dining experience became solely Java Jay, until the Davis Diner opened. Now both offer late night programs. Java Jay is open until 2 a.m. every night. Davis Diner is open until midnight Monday through Thursday, 8 p.m. on Friday and is closed Saturday and Sunday.

Java Jay has an extensive menu of soups, salads and sandwiches. If you crave soda-fountain food, the Diner has a multitude of “diner” dishes, including shakes and malts.

“The Diner is off to a really good start this year, with students as well as faculty members enjoying the menus,” said Pat Hoover, administrative assistant.

Jack and Ed’s also will remain open until 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Hoover also said that all food services in the Student Center and Java Jay now accept credit cards.

“We are trying to be more customer friendly,” Hoover said.
