VIVA Mexico

The Xalapa group performs various traditional dances at the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. The celebration, which took place last Friday, featured dancers, storytellers and musicians.

Friday, Creighton celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by inviting various groups to perform at an outdoor concert on the Kiewit Fitness Center Patio. The groups were invited the day before Mexican Independence Day, which takes place Sept. 16th.

“[We wanted] to expose Creighton students to various aspects of culture,” said Teri Dameron, coordinator of Multicultural Student Services.

One of the groups invited, called the Marimba Orchestra America de Guadalajara, played handcrafted wooden instruments called marimbas.

There also were international storytellers Awele Makeba and Dayton Edmonds present on the patio. The event was sponsored by the Creighton University Latino Student Association, Inter-Residence Hall Government Lectures, Films and Concerts and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
