Matt McCarville: Students must reap results from CU

Matt McCarville isn’t your average “Super Senior.” He’s also a cancer survivor.

During his freshman year McCarville, a senior Business Management major, was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hogdkins Lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy and radiation until the summer after his sophomore year. During that time, he took a minimum number of credits, which put him behind.

“The extra year definitely hasn’t hurt me,” McCarville said. “It’s given me the chance to get more involved on campus, and I’ve had opportunies I couldn’t have had if I was graduating this year.”

McCarville said those extra leadership experiences are what makes him the top candidate because he will have different perspectives in mind.

Those experiences include: participation in Mock Trial and the Pre-Law Society; Treasurer of Habitat for Humanity; Social and Recruitment Chair for Phi Kappa Psi; and he was one of the founding members of the business fraternity Phi Beta Lambda. He was also a CSU representative last year.

“I’m the only candidate with leadership experience that goes beyond CSU,” McCarville said. “I have a unique student-focused eye of running things.”

McCarville said that position of president is about making sure students are the beneficiaries of the government system. His top goal is to increase the student body’s knowledge of what CSU does.

“CSU does way more than programming, and many students don’t know what we really do or how many organizations are even on campus,” McCarville said. “CSU finds ways to give back the student fees that are charged yearly.”

When he’s not at school, McCarville enjoys cars, cigars, studying law and politics. He said he enjoys giving advice and loves helping people out no matter what the costs.
And his weakness? Chocolate.

“I’m a chocolate fiend and I have no clue why,” McCarville said.
