JMC Scholarships and Awards
Upper class JMC majors can apply for financial aid through the department’s generous scholarship program by filling out a simple application for all available scholarships early second semester. Second semester freshmen who plan to declare the JMC major at the end of the year may apply. Except for the Mildred Brown Scholarship for Omaha area minority students, JMC does not award scholarships to incoming freshmen.
Typically the department awards scholarships to at least 15 upperclass majors a year. Some are unrestricted but others have specialized requirements specified by their donors. For example:
- Omaha Press Club scholarships are restricted to juniors.
- Omaha Federation of Advertising scholarships are restricted to juniors majoring in advertising (or completing advertising track in addition to another track such as PR or Digital/New Media) who have attended OFA’s annual Meet the Pros program.
- Mildred Brown Scholarships must be awarded to minority students from the Omaha Metropolitan Area. If you are an incoming minority freshman from the Omaha area, email Dr. Eileen Wirth, Chair, at emw@creighton.edu to apply.
- The Public Relations Society of America scholarship must be awarded to a member of PRSA’s Student Society.
JMC faculty members evaluate all applicants on a combination of academic excellence, financial need, contributions to student media and professional organizations.
Scholarships are presented at the department’s annual Awards Night at the end of second semester when JMC also presents “Outstanding Senior Awards” top seniors and honors members of the Creightonian and Yearbook staffs and Advertising Campaigns competition team.
The department’s highest honor is the David Haberman Award established by Omaha attorney Richard Jeffries, an alumnus, in honor of Dr. David Haberman, professor emeritus and longtime chair, It goes to the senior whom the faculty feels best exemplifies Dr. Haberman’s qualities of unselfish service and ethics.
